The MerCs ELR series of earth leakage relays are used to detect potentially dangerous earth fault currents before damage is caused and help ensure the protection of electrical installations and persons against direct and indirect contact.

An undetected fault current may lead to cables overheating, which could start a fire. If high fault currents are involved, hazardous voltages may also appear on earthed equipment, putting lives at risk.
Earth leakage relays are usually used in conjunction with highly sensitive toroid CTs (also known as CBCTs) to perform the function of detecting these leakage currents and tripping a control circuit before any mishap takes place.
CBCTs work on the Kirchoff's principle that the sum of currents at any point in a circuit is zero.
An imbalance in the sum of the currents may indicate that power is going somewhere it is not supposed to i.e. in to a person and through to earth or via another incorrect pathway back to earth.
If there is an imbalance and the sum of the currents in the circuit is not below a pre-set safe level, the ELR detects the change in signal from the toroid and trips a control circuit.
The Mercs ME-ELR Earth Leakage Relays provides real-time leakage current display and has a 50% pre-fault contact that may be helpful in signalling of a potential fault and allows for the operator to make an assessment of the level of risk before the control circuit trips.
